Linux Notes:

10 Feb. 2012.

Change default OS in grub2:

“sudo gedit /etc/default/grub”

then edit the line –
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
to
GRUB_DEFAULT=4

save the file, then run
“sudo update-grub”

==================================
echo $PASSWORD | sudo -S $COMMAND

===================================
Save an NTFS into a compressed image file:

ntfsclone --save-image -o - /dev/sda1 | gzip -c > win.gz

Restore an NTFS volume from a compressed image file:

gunzip -c win.gz | ntfsclone --restore-image --overwrite /dev/sda1 -

=====================================

Partimage Commandline Progress Will Be Shown :

Save:

partimage -z1 -b -V104857600 -f2 -o -d save /dev/sda1 win

Restore:

partimage -b -f2 restore /dev/sda1 win.000

Do something for all files in folder with same extn.:

#!/bin/bash

for f in *.ogg
do
ffmpeg -sameq -i $f $f.mp3
done

======================================

Windows – “Do something for all files in folder…”

FOR /F "tokens=*" %G IN ('dir /b *.webm') DO ffmpeg -i "%G" -aq 8 "%G.mp3"

Go to directory, and paste the command.

For *.bat file may be two “%” signs are needed, like bellow (not sure & tested):

FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('dir /b *.webm') DO ffmpeg -i "%%G" -aq 8 "%%G.mp3"

======================================

Install *.deb package and fulfill dependency:

sudo dpkg -i downloaded_package.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

The first command will unpack the package, and most probably give an error of missing dependencies.
The second command instructs apt-get to fix this problem. If these dependencies are available in the repositories, it will install them, and sucessfully finish the installation of downloaded_package.deb.

=========================================

Ubuntu 12.04 add application icon on taskbar:

Alt+WinKey+Right-click -> Add to panel.

==========================================

Linux Mint Remember Brightness Setting:

Make a batch file and keep it /usr/local/bin, chmod 755:

###########################################

#! /bin/sh

echo 4 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

###########################################

Go to System > Preferences > Startup Applications. Add the batch file.

  • UBUNTU 14.04

Enable root:

Set a password for root first ( passwd root), then

Enter command:

# sudo gedit /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf

Add the following line and save:

# greeter-show-manual-login=true

Logout and click on “Login” so that you can get the editbox where you can enter username as root.

—————————

Enable sound while logged as root:

I found that if I login as root, there is no sound. Made a script which would be given bellow, chmod 755 TheScript and kept it in /etc/init.d folder.

#TheScript:

—————————————————————————————

#! /bin/sh

usermod -a -G pulse-access someusername
usermod -a -G pulse-access root
pulseaudio --daemon --system=1

—————————————————————————————

Then entered command:

update-rc.d TheScript defaults

Don’t know whether it is good or bad, but now the sound is working by the grace of Allah.

Move window titlebar icon from left to right:

Install “Unity Tweak Tool”.

Open from “System Tools -> Preferences -> Unity Tweak Tool”. Now test with it, I am having strange results! So go on testing…. But the utility is good for some other changing too.

Install Classic Gnome:

Enter command:

# sudo apt-get update

# sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Logout and click on ubuntu icon to select gnome.

Install Synaptic:

Enter command:

# apt-get install synapse

( Also Install pcmanfm. After install go to /usr/share/applications,  look for “File Manager PCManFM” copy paste it on desktop )

Missing Synaptic quick search box:

sudo apt-get install apt-xapian-index
sudo update-apt-xapian-index -vf

"IF NOT, TRY..."

sudo apt-get install --reinstall synaptic
sudo dpkg-reconfigure synaptic

  • Reinstall grub when there is a installed linux and windows – and once upon a time,  there was a system of dual booting of windows & linux, and for some reason now the grub booatloader is gone:

1. Boot computer with “Super grub2 disk“.

2. Choose “Find any OS”.

3. Select the linux and boot it.

4. After getting to it enter command:

# grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sda

grub2 menu for windows:

#########################

menuentry “Windows” {
set root=(hd0,1)
chainloader +1
}

#########################

At the end of file – “/etc/grub.d/40_custom”

Run VLC as root:

First backup /usr/bin/vlc (In case something …. :))

Enter command:

sed -i ‘s/geteuid/getppid/g’ /usr/bin/vlc

Windows 7 & XP + Linux Dual boot:

Windows 7 installed first at the 1st partition, then xp. EasyBcd was installed and run from xp. Then grub or grub2 finally.

–> If using grub legacy or old grub the entry for windows is as bellow:

# For booting Windows :
title Microsoft Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

–> If using grub2, an entry is added in /etc/grub.d/40_custom, and run update-grub at the end:

menuentry “Windows” {
set root=(hd0,1)
chainloader +1
}

Mount Unmount on windows:

* List mounted partitions:

mountvol /l

* Mount partition/volume on G:\:

mountvol G:\ \\?\Volume{09c2439d-8c94-11e4-b516-00acbfbd9eb0}\

* Unmount G: drive:

mountvol G:\ /d

Hibernate is not working on windows 7 anymore:

Right click on “Computer” icon on the desktop, click on Manage. On the left pane Click Storage > Disk Management. Right click on (C:) where windows is installed, click “Mark Partition as Active”. This would solve the problem. This can also be done from “gparted” on linux. By using Manage Flags and set (c:) or /dev/sda1 flag “Boot”.

{I have dual boot on my laptop win7 and linux. The procedure messed up my MBR – grub and made me unable to boot any OS. I reinstalled linux to reinstall grub2 again – Linux Mint. Then everything became OK.}

Windows 7 Get All Settings In A Folder:

Make a new folder and name it as bellow:

All Settings.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

The name “All Settings” can be changed to anything, but the rest should be as it is.

It should work, if not try restarting (app->then->win). Anyway not sure about this.

    Assalamualaikum Sahin bhai. What a surprise! Good to see you here.

    Lot of time is wasted without the proper machine – frustrating, so trying to get these🙂 also consider that I can’t get commercial PCB. It’s fun too.

    Take care.

    Best regards.
